Simplify

Summer is here!
I tend to panic in summer time.
Routine is thrown off, the heat makes me feel stuck inside, and the kids get... BORED!

So, that word "bored" is an interesting one.
It used to scare me.
 Now, I embrace it.
I used to try to fill each moment that felt "boring"
Now I let it be.
And time to be is a true gift.

Beautiful things are born out of unscheduled times in our day.
Slowing down and simplifying is trickling into all areas of our life and we are thankful that the Lord has brought us to this place of rest and peace.

WILD

What a special day!
We got some behind the scenes access to the Wild Animal Park thanks to my sister's sweet boyfriend who works there!

The kids and I were able to visit the barn where they keep the Okapis.
These animals are so neat.
The kids got to feed and pet them.
They will never forget it.

Ava thought riding around in the cart was pretty special!

Carousel time.
Their animal choices are all very appropriate.

I could have watched this guy all day long.
WOW...what a beautiful animal!

The gorillas are always a highlight as well.
(T and I making our best gorilla noises)

Thank you Nathan and Auntie for such a fun day at the Wild Animal Park!

Teaching From Rest

Trying to pick out some meaningful quotes from the first half of this book (Teaching From Rest) but I can't really narrow it down.
It's filled with sweet truths and encouragement.

I have a favorite book on homeschooling.
Some days I actually go into my laundry room, close the door tight, and flip quickly through to the highlighted sections, just to refuel.
Sometimes there are tears involved.
I think this one is becoming a quick favorite as well...

"No task is too trivial, no assignment too small. Educating our children is an offering of love we make to the God who was so gracious to bestow them upon us in the first place. Every moment of the daily grind in raising and teaching and loving on them is hallowed, because we do it for Him and because there would be no point of doing it without Him."-Teaching from Rest

"Surrender your idea of what an ideal homeschool day should look like and take on, with both hands, the day that is." -Teaching from Rest

"Peace comes from recognizing that our real task is to wake up each day and get our marching orders from God. It comes from diligence to the work He hands us, but diligence infused with faith, with resting in God’s promises to guide..." -Teaching from Rest

"The great thing, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one's 'own' or 'real' life.  The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one's real life-the life God is sending one day by day. What one calls one's real life is a phantom of ones's own imagination." -C.S Lewis

"Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life." —Charlotte Mason, A Philosophy of Education

"We can’t really rest in God’s care until we trust that He will indeed care for us" -Teaching from Rest

"Before we attempt to live a day well, teach our children, or tackle our to-dos, first we put the whole thing at His feet. We beg God to use us to fulfill His purpose, and then we see that every frustration in the day ahead is an answer to that very prayer." -Teaching from Rest

Quail Eggs

We were gifted some beautiful quail eggs from a friend who lives nearby.
Aren't they so cool?

And as it goes around here, everything that comes to us is an opportunity for learning.
So we did.
The boys' imaginations ran wild.
They thought they looked like dinosaur eggs.

Water coloring for our nature journals.

We are big fans of crayon resist art.

Aww, little brother, we love you so.

So now that we've observed and painted, we will cook them up and see how they taste.
Yum!
